Homeschooling families seeking the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation are subject to all diocesan norms for the preparation of those sacraments. Before preparing for the reception of a sacrament, families should first speak to their Pastor or Director of Religious Education. While certain aspects of preparation, such as catechetical content, may take place in the homeschooling environment, additional requirements such as attendance at an approved retreat, Saints report, service, etc., - as appropriate to the specific Sacrament-must still be accomplished through one's registered parish Thus, it is important that notification of intent to receive the sacraments and coordination with the Pastor and/or Director of Religious Education of the family's registered parish to ensure accomplishment of all requirements takes place two years prior to the reception of either First Holy Communion or Confirmation.
The Diocesan Norms for Confirmation and Guidelines for First Holy Communion are published at the below links. It is highly encouraged that homeschooling families review these documents in their fullness for their guidance.
